Teaching for Competence

I am writing to formally request financial support to enable the affordable publication and distribution of my professional development guide, Teaching for Competence: A Practical Guide for Primary School Teachers (Grades 1–7 East Africa).

Background and Context

Primary school teachers in East Africa, particularly those working in rural and low-resource settings, face unique classroom realities: classes of 40 to 60 learners, limited teaching materials, and high demands to deliver the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC). While teachers are expected to shift from traditional content delivery to competence-based learning, many lack practical, context-appropriate guidance.

Teaching for Competence was specifically written to bridge this gap. Designed around the realities of real East African primary classrooms, the guide covers eight primary subject areas—Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Religious Education (CRE/IRE), Kiswahili, Creative Arts, and Local Languages. It offers low-resource strategies, worked classroom examples, differentiation frameworks (such as Three-Version Task design), and 45 hands-on Application Tasks that teachers can implement immediately.

The Financial Challenge & Project Objectives

To maximize pedagogical impact, the book features high-quality colored illustrations, visual contrast tables, and real-life classroom diagrams that clearly demonstrate competence-based methods.

• Unit Production Cost: UGX 20,000 per copy (due to full-color illustration and quality binding).
• Target Print Run: 800 copies.
• Total Project Cost: UGX 16,000,000 (Sixteen Million Uganda Shillings).

The Target Price Strategy:

The target audience—rural primary school teachers—cannot afford to purchase professional materials at UGX 20,000 per copy. To make this guide truly accessible, my goal is to subsidize the book so it can be offered to teachers at a heavily discounted rate of UGX 10,000 per copy.

Funding Request

To make this pricing model feasible and reach 800 teachers across high-need rural areas, I am seeking grant assistance to cover the cost gap:

Expected Impact

With your support, this grant will directly:

1. Provide 800 primary teachers with a lifelong, practical tool for competence-based lesson planning, active assessment, and large-class management.
2. Positively impact an estimated 32,000 to 48,000 primary school learners across East Africa by raising the quality of everyday classroom instruction.
3. Promote sustainable professional learning habits through the book's structured teacher journaling frameworks and peer-observation tools.
